Is Your Baby Toxic from Environmental Pollution?by Jeffrey Dach MD

There is alarming news from the University of California about toxic chemicals in virtually all pregnant women. Tracey Woodruff found 163 different chemicals in pregnant women including banned Flame Retardants and DDT. A previous 2004 study showed 287 toxic chemicals in babies cord blood samples. How do we avoid it and what can we do about it?

Tracey Woodruff found 163 different toxic chemicals in pregnant women (1-9).
Here is the partial list:

1) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs),
2) organochlorine pesticides, (DDT)

POLARBeararcticcircleMeet the most Contaminated Animal on the Planet

No Place to Run – Toxic Contamination in the Arctic Circle

You might think polar bears are safe from industrial pollution. You might think there are pristine places on the earth like the Arctic Circle that represent a safe haven from the chemicals. Perhaps we can run away and avoid this toxic chemical soup. Nope, think again. Arctic polar bears are the most contaminated on the planet thanks to a bio-magnification effect as we go higher up in the food chain.(15) The toxic chemicals get more concentrated as we trace it from insect to fish to polar bear fat stores. Toxic chemical laden wildlife are food staples for the native Inuit peoples of the Arctic Circle resulting in high levels of PCB contamination.(16)

Inuit People of the Arctic – Health Effects of Toxic Contamination

EskimoFamily2Arctic Inuit women consume 14 times the tolerable intake of chlordane, toxaphene, PCBs and other pesticides causing infertility, stillbirths and birth defects. Many of the children have compromised immune systems with increased cases of otitis media that leave them hearing impaired.(17-22)

What’s going on in the Neighborhood – Thyroid Problems

Long term studies of contaminants in human milk were done in Sweden over 30 years finding a recent increase (doubling over 5 years) of banned PBDEs (used as a fire retardant) (23) This chemical contains bromine and is toxic to the thyroid gland.(24-26)

Hormonal Disruption

Volumes of research over decades have now fully documented the hormonal disruption of pesticides in wild-life and humans (27-31)  Certain fruits and vegetables are higher in pesticide exposure and are to be avoided, or use organic. (32)  Even though the toxic pesticides such as DDT, Lindane, Eldrin etc. have been banned in the US, they continue to be manufactured and exported to developing countries. 108,000 metric tons of banned pesticides were exported from the U.S. to developing countries from 1992 to 1994. (33) Global pesticide use has been increasing about 1% per year in step with population growth, also about 1% per year.(35)

In addition to the thyroid and hormonal disruption, other studies have shown that organochloride pesticides cause neurotoxicity. (36)

The Politics of Pollution – Chemical Industry Lobby vs. The People

President Bush “Rolls Back” and Dismantles Environmental Protection

You might ask why we have such deplorable chemical pollution of the adornment, wildlife and the bodies of our children?  Where is the regulatory oversight of the chemical industry? The answer is that regulation was dismantled under the Bush administration in order to placate the demands of the chemical industry for less regulation and more profits.  Here is a list of the 100 worse “rollbacks” of environmental protection by the Bush administration.

Addendum 3/9/15: The Case for Banning Glyphosate

Will Richmond Reject Monsanto’s Roundup? The Case for Banning Glyphosate February 2015 By Jeff Ritterman, M.D., Truthout.

Glyphosate, the Monsanto’s Round-Up herbicide commonly used on GMO soy called “Round-up Ready Soy” has been implicated in birth defects and spontaneous abortions by upregulating the Vitamin A pathway in embryos.  Glyphosate also causes DNA damage, and increases cancer incidence.  Glyphosate afects the Shikimate pathway which kills of gut bacteria.  Peasant farmers in Central America, Sri Lanka and India exposed to Glyphosate develop chronic toxic kidney disease and kidney failure.

See this article:  Int. J. Environ. Res. Conclusions: Pregnant women in the U.S. are exposed to multiple chemicals. Further efforts are warranted to understand sources of exposure and implications for policy-making.

(2)   UCSF study identifies chemicals in pregnant women

The bodies of virtually all U.S. pregnant women carry multiple chemicals, including some banned since the 1970s and others used in common products such as non-stick cookware, processed foods and personal care products, according to a new study from UCSF. The study marks the first time that the number of chemicals to which pregnant women are exposed has been counted.

Analyzing data for 163 chemicals, researchers detected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), phenols, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and perchlorate in 99 to 100 percent of pregnant women. Among the chemicals found in the study group were PBDEs, compounds used as flame retardants now banned in many states including California, and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane ( DDT), an organochlorine pesticide banned in the United States in 1972.

Toxins in Arctic Eskimos Polar Bears

Infiltrating the Food Chain

Persistent organic pollutants are industrial chemicals that break down slowly and collect in the fatty tissues of animals. The toxins have been found to accumulate in ever larger concentrations in species higher up the food chain—a process known as bioaccumulation. In 1970 the insecticide DDT was found in the blubber of ringed seals in the Arctic. By the mid-1970s it was also found in beluga whales, polar bears, and fish.  Further tests discovered traces of some of the world’s most toxic industrial chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin, in Arctic wildlife. In 1987 high levels of PCBs were discovered in nursing Inuit mothers in Nunavut, a semiautonomous territory in the Canadian Arctic.

Inuit: POPs enter the food chain at the microscopic level and remain in the fat of living creatures, bioaccumulating up the food chain to the point that the fat of Arctic narwhal and beluga whales would be classified as hazardous waste. Inuit of Northern Canada and Greenland, who consume this fat as well as that of seals, polar bear and walrus as a portion of their diet, are highly contaminated. Canadian Inuit women of child bearing age consume 14 times the tolerable daily intake (TDI) of chlordane, toxaphene, PCBs and other pesticides. They suffer infertility, stillbirths and birth defects. Many of their children have compromised immune systems, suffering near constant colds and flus that leave them hearing impaired.

Contaminants in Human Milk

Chemosphere. 2000 May-Jun;40(9-11):1111-23.
Certain organochlorine and organobromine contaminants in Swedish human milk in perspective of past 20-30 years. Norén K, Meironyté D. Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

The investigations of organochlorine compounds in breast milk from women living in the Stockholm region started in 1967. The present study summarises the investigations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), naphthalenes (PCNs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides (DDT, DDE, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin) as well as methylsulfonyl metabolites of PCBs and DDE in human milk sampled during different periods up to 1997. During the course of 20-30 yr the levels of organochlorine compounds in human milk have decreased to various extent. A decrease to the half of the original concentration was attained in the range of 4-17 yr periods. On the contrary to the organochlorine compounds, the concentrations of PBDEs have increased during the period 1972-1997, indicating a doubling of the levels by 5 yr. The levels reflect the environmental contamination and background levels in the population. The accumulation and ongoing increase in the levels of PBDEs calls for immediate measures to stop the environmental pollution and human exposure to PBDEs.

Flame Retardants and Thyroid

Postnatal exposure to chlorinated dioxins and related chemicals on thyroid hormone status in Japanese breast-fed infants. Nagayama J, Okamura K, Iida T, Hirakawa H, Matsueda T, Tsuji H, Hasegawa M, Sato K, Ma HY, Yanagawa T, Igarashi H, Fukushige J, Watanabe T.

Effects of postnatal exposure to polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs) on thyroid hormone status were studied in the peripheral blood of 36 breast-fed Japanese infants. Estimated total intakes of these chemicals in toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) converted into 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) from the breast milk significantly and negatively correlated with the levels of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) in the blood of breast-fed babies.

World pesticide use. Organochlorine insecticides such as DDT, lindane, and toxaphene are still widely used in the developing world, although their danger to humans and animals is well known. Many developed countries have banned or severely restricted the most toxic of these compounds but continue to manufacture and sell them. Trade in restricted and banned pesticides is almost impossible to track, but customs records for shipments from the United States show that at least 108,000 metric tons of banned, restricted, or discontinued pesticides were exported from U.S. ports from 1992 to 1994

The use of agrochemicals, including pesticides, remains a common practice especially in tropical regions and South countries. Cheap compounds, such as DDT, HCH and lindane, that are environmentally persistent, are today banned from agriculture use in developed countries, but remain popular in developing countries. As a consequence, persistent residues of these chemicals contaminate food and disperse in the environment.

The world population grew from 2.5 billion in 1950 to 6.1 billion in the year 2000. By the year 2050 the world population is estimated to reach 9.1 billion (between 7.7 and 10.6 billion, depending on estimates). This means that the population of Earth more than doubled in the past 50 years, from 1950 to 2000, and will probably grow only slightly less in the 50 years from 2000 to 2050 (Fig. 1).

Currently, world population is growing with an annual rate of 1.2%,
Pesticide use is also growing at a 1% per year rate.

A properly functioning liver is vital to health.

What is the liver and how does it function? The liver is your largest internal organ and it performs many functions including detoxification of the body. The liver works by both filtering toxins directly and by altering toxins so that they can be removed at other stages of detoxification. The liver filters toxins from one quart of blood every minute. After the liver processes these endotoxins (produced in the body), exotoxins (from outside the body) and other wastes, they are sent to the kidneys and colon for elimination.

Liver Detox is an easy-to use, two-part cleansing and detoxification program formulated to simultaneously support, protect, stimulate and assist with the body’s natural detoxification of the liver with natural minerals, vitamins, herbs and amino acids.* Both the Morning Formula (Part I) and the Evening Formula (Part II) contain minerals, herbs and amino acids that may help promote healthy liver function.*

Liver Detox includes:

Milk Thistle – an herb used traditionally to support normal detoxification functions of the liver.* The antioxidant activity of the main ingredient in milk thistle (silymarin) may help promote healthy liver function and protect healthy liver cells.*

L-Methionine – amino acid that the liver uses to create glutathione. Glutathione is powerful amino acid made by the liver, which acts as an antioxidant and detoxifying compound.* Supplementing with L-methionine can help raise glutathione levels.

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) – the liver also uses NAC to create glutathione. Supplementing with NAC can help raise glutathione levels and thus support the natural detoxification functions of the liver.*

Alpha Lipoic Acid – antioxidant that helps revitalize glutathione and supports detoxification.*

Selenium – essential trace mineral that enhances the antioxidant power of zinc and vitamins to allow them to function better in their natural detoxification roles.*

Ayurvedic Herbs – used to promote the natural detoxification capabilities of the liver.* Among the most commonly used herbs are Boerhavia Diffusa, Eclipta Alba, Terminalia Belerica, Tinospora Cordifolia, and Picrorhiza Kurroa.

Dandelion – herb used traditionally to stimulate bile production and promote healthy liver detoxification.*
