Are Your Drinking Flouride?
A new study in JAMA Aug 2019 shows that fluoridated drinking water is harmful to developing babies.(51-52) The authors state: “maternal exposure to higher levels of fluoride during pregnancy was associated with lower IQ scores in children aged 3 to 4 years. ” (51) This JAMA study confirms previous studies showing the developing fetus is most vulnerable to neurotoxic effects of flouride in drinking water. (52)
163 Different Chemicals in Pregnant Women
There is alarming news from the University of California about toxic chemicals in virtually all pregnant women. Tracey Woodruff found 163 different chemicals in pregnant women including banned Flame Retardants and DDT. A previous 2004 study showed 287 toxic chemicals in babies cord blood samples. How do we avoid it and what can we do about it?

287 Different Toxic Chemicals in the Baby
A 2004 study showed 287 toxic chemicals in babies cord blood. Ten random samples of newborn umbilical cord blood from the Red Cross showed 287 environmental chemicals. (10-14).

No Place to Run – Toxic Contamination in the Arctic Circle
You might think polar bears are safe from industrial pollution. You might think there are pristine places on the earth like the Arctic Circle that represent a safe haven from the chemicals. Perhaps we can run away and avoid this toxic chemical soup. Nope, think again. Arctic polar bears are the most contaminated on the planet thanks to a bio-magnification effect as we go higher up in the food chain.(15) The toxic chemicals get more concentrated as we trace it from insect to fish to polar bear fat stores. Toxic chemical laden wildlife are food staples for the native Inuit peoples of the Arctic Circle resulting in high levels of PCB contamination.(16)
Inuit People of the Arctic – Health Effects of Toxic Contamination
Arctic Inuit women consume 14 times the tolerable intake of chlordane, toxaphene, PCBs and other pesticides causing infertility, stillbirths and birth defects. Many of the children have compromised immune systems with increased cases of otitis media that leave them hearing impaired.(17-22)
What’s going on in the Neighborhood – Thyroid Problems
Long term studies of contaminants in human milk were done in Sweden over 30 years finding a recent increase (doubling over 5 years) of banned PBDEs (used as a fire retardant) (23) This chemical contains bromine and is toxic to the thyroid gland.(24-26)
Hormonal Disruption
Volumes of research over decades have now fully documented the hormonal disruption of pesticides in wild-life and humans (27-31) Certain fruits and vegetables are higher in pesticide exposure and are to be avoided, or use organic. (32) Even though the toxic pesticides such as DDT, Lindane, Eldrin etc. have been banned in the US, they continue to be manufactured and exported to developing countries. 108,000 metric tons of banned pesticides were exported from the U.S. to developing countries from 1992 to 1994. (33) Global pesticide use has been increasing about 1% per year in step with population growth, also about 1% per year.(35)
Neurotoxicity
In addition to the thyroid and hormonal disruption, other studies have shown that organochloride pesticides cause neurotoxicity. (36)

The answer is that regulation was dismantled under the Bush administration in order to placate the demands of the chemical industry for less regulation and more profits. Here is a list of the 100 worse “rollbacks” of environmental protection by the Bush administration.
Killed – The Toxic Substances Control Act – TSCA
In the first half of 2010, the chemical industry spent 40 million on lobbying , effectively killing the toxic chemical reform bill in Congress.

Bisphenol A (BPA), which makes plastic hard and clear, and is found in epoxy resins that are used to line the inside of metal food and beverage cans, was identified in 96 percent of the women surveyed. Prenatal exposure to BPA has been linked to adverse health outcomes, affecting brain development and increasing susceptibility to cancer later in life, according to the researchers.

Infiltrating the Food Chain
Persistent organic pollutants are industrial chemicals that break down slowly and collect in the fatty tissues of animals. The toxins have been found to accumulate in ever larger concentrations in species higher up the food chain—a process known as bioaccumulation. In 1970 the insecticide DDT was found in the blubber of ringed seals in the Arctic. By the mid-1970s it was also found in beluga whales, polar bears, and fish. Further tests discovered traces of some of the world’s most toxic industrial chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin, in Arctic wildlife. In 1987 high levels of PCBs were discovered in nursing Inuit mothers in Nunavut, a semiautonomous territory in the Canadian Arctic.

Inuit: POPs enter the food chain at the microscopic level and remain in the fat of living creatures, bioaccumulating up the food chain to the point that the fat of Arctic narwhal and beluga whales would be classified as hazardous waste. Inuit of Northern Canada and Greenland, who consume this fat as well as that of seals, polar bear and walrus as a portion of their diet, are highly contaminated. The investigations of organochlorine compounds in breast milk from women living in the Stockholm region started in 1967. The present study summarises the investigations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), naphthalenes (PCNs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides (DDT, DDE, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin) as well as methylsulfonyl metabolites of PCBs and DDE in human milk sampled during different periods up to 1997. During the course of 20-30 yr the levels of organochlorine compounds in human milk have decreased to various extent. A decrease to the half of the original concentration was attained in the range of 4-17 yr periods. On the contrary to the organochlorine compounds, the concentrations of PBDEs have increased during the period 1972-1997, indicating a doubling of the levels by 5 yr. The levels reflect the environmental contamination and background levels in the population. The accumulation and ongoing increase in the levels of PBDEs calls for immediate measures to stop the environmental pollution and human exposure to PBDEs.

The use of agrochemicals, including pesticides, remains a common practice especially in tropical regions and South countries. Cheap compounds, such as DDT, HCH and lindane, that are environmentally persistent, are today banned from agriculture use in developed countries, but remain popular in developing countries. As a consequence, persistent residues of these chemicals contaminate food and disperse in the environment.
The world population grew from 2.5 billion in 1950 to 6.1 billion in the year 2000. By the year 2050 the world population is estimated to reach 9.1 billion (between 7.7 and 10.6 billion, depending on estimates). This means that the population of Earth more than doubled in the past 50 years, from 1950 to 2000, and will probably grow only slightly less in the 50 years from 2000 to 2050 (Fig. 1).

Despite the rapidly growing body of substantial evidence, fluoridationists continue to reject anything that threatens their commitment to protecting fluoride – including a meticulously peer-reviewed US government-funded study published by JAMA Pediatrics in August 2019. This multicenter birth cohort study included mother-offspring pairs in fluoridated and non-fluoridated cities in Canada. It found: “A 1-mg higher daily intake of fluoride among pregnant women was associated with a 3.66 lower IQ score in boys and girls” – confirming what three other studies in the last two years revealed: babies in the womb are the most vulnerable to fluoride’s neurotoxicity.(48)

A Snapshot of Chemicals in Doctors and Nurses
Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) in partnership with American Nurses Association (ANA) and Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) have released the “Hazardous Chemicals In Health Care” report, detailing the first investigation ever of chemicals found in the bodies of health care professionals. The inquiry found that all of the 20 participants had toxic chemicals associated with health care in their bodies. Each participant had at least 24 individual chemicals present, four of which are on the recently released Environmental Protection Agency list of priority chemicals for regulation. These chemicals are all associated with chronic illness and physical disorders.
